Making Snack Mixes With Your Bulk Pecan Halves

Pecans are usually much cheaper when purchased in bulk. However, if you buy a bulk bag of pecans with the intention of making just one or two recipes, you may then have some extra pecan halves to work with. Using them to make snack mixes is a great option! They're a delicious ingredient and very nutrient-dense. Here are two delicious snack mixes you can make with your extra bulk pecan halves:

"Everything Bagel" Nut Mix

You have most likely heard of "everything bagels" — the ones topped with everything from sesame seeds to garlic. This nut mix is seasoned the same way, making for a really tasty treat. To make one batch, you'll need:

  • 2 cups pecan halves
  • 1 cup cashews
  • 1 cup almonds
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons poppy seeds
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 1 pinch of black pepper
  • 1/4 cup canola oil

Pour all of the nuts into a large bowl. Pour in the canola oil, and toss the nuts around to coat them evenly in the oil. Sprinkle on the garlic salt, onion powder, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and black pepper. Spread the nuts out on a baking sheet, and roast at 250 degrees F for 20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes during roasting. Remove from oven, let cool completely, and store in a sealed container.

Sweet and Salty Snack Mix

This snack mix has a really addictive flavor and is fun to munch. You can substitute any cracker you prefer for the oyster crackers and cheese crackers. You'll need:

  • 1 cup pecan halves
  • 2 cups oyster crackers
  • 1 cup small cheese crackers
  • 1/2 cup crispy potato sticks
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Combine the pecans, oyster crackers, small cheese crackers, and potato sticks in a bowl. In a separate bowl, melt the butter. Stir the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, honey, and salt into the butter. Pour the butter mixture over the crackers mixture, and stir well. Then, evenly spread the mixture out onto a baking sheet, and bake at 250 degrees F for 15 minutes while stirring every 5 minutes during baking. Let cool, and store in a sealed container.

You can make changes to the listed ingredients, as desired, to suit your taste. With these snack recipes in your back pocket, you may never wonder how to use up your pecans again. You can find these nuts at a local bulk store like Selman Nut Co. near you.
